Thank you SO MUCH for the recommendation, it is a truly unique and beautiful book. I'll get back to you with more detailed thoughts because I'm still processing!
I re-read your piece about this book and I think you summarized it perfectly. Three people all experiencing the same trauma of being female at birth, compounded by their own, singular traumas (being paralyzed, being trans, excruciating generational trauma/war). All are trapped in their bodies in multiple ways, illustrating the importance of intersectionality. What I found most powerful was how she opened each character up, demanding the reader understand, even empathize, with the ugliest personalities. A violent, repressive totalitarian government causes/contributes to a culture of violent, repressive masculinity: the "villains" in this book are fully humanized because the author acknowledges this formative environment of terror and helplessness. Also, beautiful writing. Now I want to read all of her books!
I am so jazzed to hear you've already read it Miriam!!! Tell me what you thought?! xox
